What is this?
8 Things is a self-paced and self-directed online class intended to introduce health professionals to Web 2.0. The first version of this class was offered in 2009. Participants completed eight learning objectives called "things" and kept a blog to record their assignments and progress.
The librarians are excited to offer a revamped version of the class which includes eight new things! If you completed the first 8 Things, you can continue your learning by choosing up to eight additional things. If you did not participate in the first 8 Things you may choose to complete the original eight things, or select up to sixteen total things (Things 1 and 2 are required for first-timers). In either case, you will document your participation by setting up and maintaining your own blog (covered in Thing 1). Previous participants may use their original blog or create a new one.
Each thing will discuss one or more Web 2.0 tools. The tools themselves will have value for you in your job as a health care professional and perhaps in your personal life as well. Participation in 8 Things is your chance to explore new tools and to think creatively about how they can be used at work. Each thing should take about an hour to complete.
Deadlines
Whether you are a new or returning participant, you must submit your blog to the librarians by March 1, 2010 (as part of Thing 1). Submitting your blog is your "registration" for the class. You must complete all of your chosen things and blog about each one by May 24, 2010. If you are unable to meet these deadlines, you are still welcome to participate, but no CME credit will be awarded. This program will remain online indefinitely for your continued use and reference.
Can I get CME credit?
Physicians and nurses can get credit for a maximum of 8 things. 1 credit hour will be awarded per thing completed before May 24, 2010. If you are a returning participant who received credit the first time around, you are only eligible to get credit for things 9-16. Please indicate your interest in CME credit upon submitting your blog.

Who can participate?
This program is open to all Regions Hospital and HealthPartners employees. Whether you are new to Web 2.0 or an experienced user, you are invited to join.
What are the objectives?
The objectives are simple. After the class you should be able to:
- Define Web 2.0
- Start and maintain a blog
- Discuss your chosen Web. 2.0 tools from the following: blogs and blogging, Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds, podcasts, social bookmarking, collaborative tools, reference sharing, mobile phone tools, online project management, presentation tools, third party PubMed applications, personal homepages, Twitter, Health 2.0 and online social networks.
- Describe how Web 2.0 can be used by the health professional
Each thing will begin with a description of a Web 2.0 tool or concept, followed by a list of assignments related to the tool. The assignments will give you hands-on experience and help you understand the tool. When you are done with each assignment, you will blog about what you have learned. Your blog is a communication tool with which you can share your reactions, ideas, challenges and questions with the other 8 Things participants. That's right--the other participants will be able to read your blog, and vice versa! All participants must submit the name and URL of their blog (in Thing 1) so it can be posted here on the "Mother Blog" in the right-hand sidebar. Your blog posts will also serve as documentation that you have completed all of your chosen things (for CME credit).
Where did the idea come from?
This learning program is based on 23 Things On a Stick which was developed by the seven Minnesota multitype multicounty library systems for staff development purposes. 23 Things on a Stick was influenced by the Library Learning 2.0 program developed by Helene Blowers at the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenberg County. Library Learning 2.0 was based on the article "43 Things I (or You) Might Want to do This Year" (Information Outlook February 2006) and the website 43 Things.
How do I get started?
To get started, read and complete Thing 1 which will teach you about blogging and help you set up your blog. At the end of Thing 1, you will be directed to submit your blog using Survey Monkey. This will also serve as your registration for the class. You will not receive a confirmation, but you will know you are registered when you see your blog under "Participants' Blogs" on the right sidebar of this blog (this may take a few days). Your name will not be listed; only the name of your blog will appear.
Can I blog anonymously?
Yes and no. When you create and post to your blog, you may use a screen name to keep yourself anonymous to the other participants in the program. However, you must give your real name and valid email address to the librarians upon registration.
Do I have to read other participants' blogs?
Interacting with other participants is highly recommended. Reading and commenting on other blogs will enhance your learning as well as that of your colleagues. Web 2.0 is all about sharing and communication, so commenting will be a required assignment for most things.
What if I have questions or need help?
The beauty of the self-directed online course format is that you decide when to work on your things and how much time to spend. This time around there will be a hands-on 8 Things class session in the library where the librarians will be available to help you with any problems you may be experiencing. If you register for 8 Things, you will be notified of the date and time in a forthcoming email.
The librarians at Regions Hospital Medical Library are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 4:30 to answer any questions you may have. Please feel free to contact the librarians at 651-254-3607 or send an email to MedicalLibrary@HealthPartners.com at any time. Alternatively, you may have noticed the "comment" option at the end of each thing. This function allows you to post a comment or question in response to each topic. Feel free to make use of this feature to share your thoughts or ask a question. The librarians will also provide email hints and post helpful comments on your blog from time to time. For questions about CME credit, please contact Linda Grummer at 952-883-6219 or Linda.L.Grummer@HealthPartners.com.
Can my computer handle this?
There are a few things you need on your computer to help you with 8 Things. You probably already have them, but just to make sure, here is the list:
- Macromedia Flash Player
- Windows 2000 or higher with the latest updates installed
- Mac OS X 10.3 or higher
- Firefox1.1+, Internet Explorer 5.0+ or Safari 1.0+
- Broadband connection with 500+Kbps
- Java enabled
- Pop-Up windows enabled
- Allow cookies
- Microsoft Windows Media Player
If this sounds interesting and you would like to participate, continue to Thing 1. Good luck!
